New web design trends come and go every year. Some stayed with us, while others were just a fad. We used to have websites with stock images, then there was a trend of using big hero images and carousel on a homepage, now that too has become just a memory. The latest in the web design trends is the use of illustrations. Most of the big names have redesigned their websites to use illustrations to provide important information, including DigitalOcean, Stripe, and Slack.

This blog will take a look at the current illustration trends in web design.

Colorful Illustration:

We have recently seen a trend of using bright colors in web design. This trend is also common in illustrations. Designers use bright colored illustrations on websites to direct the attention of users to where they want. Using these illustrations, they convey the message without any text. Bright colored illustrations also help in representing playful nature of some products or companies.

Isomorphism:

Isometric illustrations make use of gradient and opacity cleverly to portray three-dimensional design in two dimensions. The Isometric design gives illustrations a whole new depth and look. It is helpful in representing a complex system or layers of UI.

For example, DigitalOcean, an Infrastructure as a Service provider, use isometric illustrations on their product page to illustrate the complexity and scale of their product.

Typography:

Typography is the essence of any design. While some designs may not use any type of typography, most of the illustrations make use of typography to convey some message. Some illustrations are based on typography only. The current trend in the typography based illustration is using bold and big typography to only direct readers attention to the message but also increase the amount of whitespace on a website.

Within this trend, there are further styles of using typography. Some popular ones include retro, modern, and hand-lettered typography illustration styles.

Abstract Illustration:

Just like Abstract art has some hidden meaning to it, abstract illustrations in web design are used to creatively portray some message. Abstract illustrations in web design are helpful in expressing ideas, enticing emotions in a user’s mind or encouraging users to interact with the website. Abstract illustrations are also an option when you are not sure what type of illustration should go with a piece of content. Since it’s abstract, it works most of the time.

Follow the Trends:

Trends are just trends. There is no guarantee how long they are going to stay. Keeping your web design updated with latest trends is a challenging and often costly task. But it is necessary to make your website look modern and usable.
