Design Articles

It is not just authors and music directors who have the power to copyright their work, but designers also have the privilege. When you think of original ideas, you should have the right to claim them yours, and not let anyone steal it.

There is an increasing case of infringement in the design industry and even big companies steal artists’ works. It is definitely not the right thing to do, and copying is a sin for any professional.

Here are six facts that designers should be educated about, so that they can protect their own work, and also not get into any trouble for copying others’ design.

There’s no need for any paperwork

When you create a logo, design a banner, or even make a painting, and post it online; you automatically get the rights for it. If someone, in any case, copies it, you can hold them responsible. Most websites mention their copyright policies in their terms and conditions and whether others can share the media or not. So you should sit back and relax, and not fret about having your work copied as you have every right to take action over someone who steals your idea.

Reusing the image is not allowed

Most people think that they can get away with using someone’s image by blurring it, editing it or changing its color. However, there are strict laws which prohibit the use of any image which does not allow the users to share it. When you need images for creating banners or other social media use, make sure to use ‘free’ photos or check the license to see if it is available for public use.

Client should buy copyright from designers

If you think that by working for a client, they are entitled to the copyright, it is not the case. It is an international practice that clients should pay the designer for their work and for the copyright before purchasing any work. This way, there are no conflicts in the future, and the client can then claim it as their property and not the designer. Otherwise, it would be just a matter of discussion as who has the rights over the design.

Your style is not protected

While your design is clearly protected under a copyright, your style is not. Other designers can get inspiration from the colors, themes and the materials you have used. They have the liberty to copy some of the approaches you have used in your artwork. Don’t get upset if this happens, take it as a positive thing that someone is getting inspired by work, and using it in their own work.
